Macintosh "Mac" Robinson is the Court Clerk at the Manhattan Criminal Court on Night Court, from Season 2 for the duration of the run of the series. The part of Mac is played by Charles Robinson. Mac replaced Lana Wagner (played by Karen Austin who appeared in 10 episodes in Season 1), who was the original court clerk on the series.
About Mac[]
Mac is a Vietnam War veteran. He is easygoing and pragmatic and was probably the most "normal" character. He had a good sense of humor, and was a loyal friend to his coworkers. He always wore a cardigan sweater, plaid shirt, and a knit tie (Dan stated in his will that Mac would get all his suits, so "he would stop wearing those God-awful sweaters"). His catchphrase was the lament "It was my favorite sweater!" after one of his garish cardigans got ruined. If he witnessed a problem, his usual first words were "Oh, my dear Lord!"
In the episode "Take My Wife, Please" in Season 2, Mac is reunited with Quon Le Robinson, a refugee woman from Vietnam (where she met Mac as a teen during his service in the Vietnam War and her family let Mac stay at their home while injured) who is trying to become a naturalized American citizen, and was somewhat naive about America and its customs, but was loving and very devoted to him.
Not wanting her to be deported, Mac married her to keep her in the country, but, after realizing that they were falling in love with each other, decided to keep the marriage intact; the couple would soon have a daughter, Renee Flicka Robinson.
Mac was raised mainly by a rich grandfather being drafted into the war, who was not happy about his eloping with Quon Le, although the why behind this is not made clear. Mac supports Quon Le when she invests in a restaurant, even though her mismanagement all but wipes out the inheritance his grandfather left him. A traditional Vietnamese snack Quon Le makes proves very popular around the courthouse, and Mac launches a side business marketing them as 'Mac-Snacks', with Harry as his partner. In the final season, Mac's film footage of Bull's wedding, while hated by the rest of the court staff, becomes a cult hit called "Connuvial Fusion", triggering Mac's interest in filmmaking, and plans to depart for film school shortly after the finale.
