Wheels of Justice: Part 1 was the ninth episode of Season 3 of Night Court, also the 44th overall series episode. Written by Jeff Reno and Ron Osborn, and directed by Alan Bergmann, the episode, which aired on NBC-TV, first aired on December 5, 1985.

Synopsis[]
Everyone is in a financial crisis when the city can't pay its employees, Harry has to evict a woman and son from a sleazy hotel, and a homeless couple from West Virginia tells their tale of woe. Part 1 of 2 part story arc.
Storyline[]
A budget crisis in the state legislature freezes the paychecks of all city employees, including the court staff. Harry faces his own crisis when the law forces him to side with a sleazy landlord against a poor cleaning lady and her unstable son. When the son is shot during an attempted armed robbery, Harry quits.
Plot Summary[]
In the first episode of a two-part story, the Night Court staff is cut off from their paychecks by a municipal budget crisis. This freeze could not have come at a worse time for Harry, who is trying to save a desperate cleaning lady (Susan Ruttan) and her troubled son (Harold P. Pruett) from being tossed into the street by a nasty landlord (Charles Bouvier). Unfortunately, despite his better efforts, Harry is forced to rule in favor of the landlord, and evict the two, much to the his dismay. The cleaning lady is left in tears, and her son is furiously throwing things at Harry and telling him off. Things don't get better, when Harry, still reeling with guilt over the ruling, hears the woes of a vagrant family, the Wheelers, a rambunctious family of indigents who claim to hail from West Virginia (In their first appearance). Tragedy strikes, when it is revealed that the son, from the previous case was involved in an armed robbery, and was shot, leaving Harry so horrified that he quit his job! (future Star Trek: The Next Generation regular Brent Spiner makes his first appearance as Bob Wheeler).
